Common Issues with DJI Drones

At Omnisky, we’ve repaired hundreds of DJI drones from minor sensor faults to full rebuilds after crashes. Here’s a guide to the most common issues we encounter, what causes them, and how our technicians fix them.

01.

ESC / Motor / Arm Problems

Symptoms:

  • “ESC Error” message on screen
  • Drone won’t take off or lifts unevenly
  • One or more arms feel stiff or loose

Causes:

  • Physical damage to the motor arm after a hard landing
  • Burnt or shorted Electronic Speed Controller (ESC) board
  • Corrosion from moisture exposure

Fix:
Our technicians inspect each arm and motor connection, test the ESC outputs, and replace damaged arms or ESC boards using genuine DJI parts. After replacement, we recalibrate the drone for balanced thrust and stable flight.

02.

Gimbal Overload / PTZ Cable Failure

Symptoms:

  • “Gimbal Motor Overload” error
  • Camera tilts erratically or shakes
  • No live feed or frozen video

Causes:

  • Damaged vibration board or gimbal motor after impact
  • Torn or loose PTZ (gimbal signal) cable
  • Faulty yaw motor assembly

Fix:
We replace or repair the gimbal assembly, flex cable, and vibration board. Afterward, the gimbal is recalibrated, ensuring smooth stabilization and clear imaging.

03.

Vision Sensors / Obstacle Sensing

Symptoms:

  • Obstacle avoidance not functioning
  • Drone drifts sideways or descends unexpectedly
  • Vision system calibration fails

Causes:

  • Dirt, cracks, or disconnection in vision sensors
  • Impact-related misalignment
  • Firmware conflicts

Fix:
Sensors are cleaned, realigned, or replaced. We then perform a full vision calibration and flight stability test to ensure all obstacle sensing systems function correctly.

04.

IMU / Compass / GPS Alignment

Symptoms:

  • “Compass Error” or “IMU Calibration Required”
  • Drone toilet-bowls (circles uncontrollably)
  • Unstable hover or flyaway behavior

Causes:

  • Magnetic interference or physical misalignment
  • Crash-induced IMU or GPS module damage
  • Outdated firmware causing calibration errors

Fix:
We inspect the compass and IMU orientation, replace damaged GPS or IMU modules, and perform synchronized calibration to restore stable flight and accurate navigation.

05.

Battery Health / Swelling

Symptoms:

  • Battery not charging or discharging rapidly
  • Battery error warning
  • Battery casing swollen or bloated

Causes:

  • Overcharging or extended storage at full charge
  • Internal cell imbalance
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures

Fix:
We test battery voltage levels and internal resistance, replace faulty cells where possible, or recommend safe disposal and replacement. Battery safety is always prioritized to prevent further damage to the drone or user.

06.

Water or Crash Damage

Symptoms:

  • Drone unresponsive or powers off mid-flight
  • Visible corrosion, dirt, or cracked frame
  • Multiple system errors after impact

Causes:

  • Water immersion or heavy rainfall exposure
  • Hard impact on ground or obstacle
  • Short circuits and board-level corrosion

Fix:
We fully disassemble and clean the unit using ultrasonic cleaning and corrosion removal techniques, replace affected components (mainboard, gimbal, ESC, GPS), and perform a full system recalibration.

When to Bring It In?

If your drone shows any of the above symptoms, even intermittently, continued flight could worsen the issue. Book your drone in for inspection before small faults become expensive repairs.
